Susan Meissner’s writing is like a warm hug or a slow dance or a good wine. Here is a book that echoes very closely what is currently going on in the world. Update 4/14/20: I feel like now is a good time to repost this review. Amidst the tragedy and challenges, they learn what they cannot live without-and what they are willing to do about it.Īs Bright as Heaven is the compelling story of a mother and her daughters who find themselves in a harsh world, not of their making, which will either crush their resolve to survive or purify it. But even as they lose loved ones, they take in a baby orphaned by the disease who becomes their single source of hope. As the pandemic claims more than twelve thousand victims in their adopted city, they find their lives left with a world that looks nothing like the one they knew. It’s curious that Christopher felt the need to answer these critics. So, how would the Tripods have taken humanity over so easily? Even a few years after the publication of the books, real human technology had advanced so rapidly that fictional Tripod technology looked rather primitive and even silly by comparison. The prequel was inspired, according to the preface, by critics who complained of the story being implausible. Or it seemed to be, anyway, before the prequel existed. Though what it means to be brainwashed is something that seems to be open for discussion. The whole series, in large part, is about brainwashing, and just how bad it is. When the Tripods Came is John Christopher’s belated prequel to the original series (which I reviewed here). It’s better to be tormented by confusion but have your own ideas than to become some sort of blissed out zombie with spinning spirals for pupils under the complete control of an insidious master. No matter how good it might make you feel, being brainwashed is something you want to avoid. Before I even get started today, let me just say right here and right now that I am against brainwashing. They also delve into the role played by women in the Civil Rights Movement. They discuss the Civil Rights Movement’s success with shifting public opinion, through nonviolent protests and indelible iconography, and whether strong statements and product name changes issued by so many corporations today are likely to lead to genuine structural change. They explore the parallels between the current civil unrest and racial injustice the country is witnessing and what took place in 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama, including police brutality then and now, and the ongoing connection between race, economics, and political pressure. They are joined by Diane McWhorter, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Carry Me Home: Birmingham, Alabama: The Climactic Battle of the Civil Rights Revolution. This week on “The Learning Curve,” Cara and Gerard mark the Juneteenth commemoration of the end of slavery with an episode devoted to Civil Rights history. In the Western Pacific in the coming decades, morality may mean giving up some of our most cherished ideals for the sake of stability. Humanitarian intervention in the Balkans in the 1990s was possible only because the Serbian regime was not a great power armed with nuclear weapons, unlike the Russian regime, which at the same time was committing atrocities of a similar scale in Chechnya where the West did nothing nor did the West do much against the ethnic cleansing in the Caucasus because there, too, was a Russian sphere of influence. Truly, in international affairs, behind all questions of morality lie questions of power. “it is not only our values that matter, but the military might that backs them up.
